Typhoon Reading

Typhoon got you excited?  Here is a little set of stories about the "South Seas" written by Jack London in 1911.  Its a little challenging and uses a broad vocabulary, but the stories are great.  I especially like the first story called The House of Mapuhi about an Typhoon!

Kiva Micro Loans

Today we talked about different ways organizations help people with challenges.  Take a look at Kiva http://www.kiva.org/# and read the profile of any one of the people who are borrowing money.  Write a reflection about their challenge and how people lending money could help.

So you want to try measuring area again?

Great!  Because our last performance was just a warm-up.  This time you will measure a more complex shape, calculate the square meters and hectares, and leave a more thoughtful and planned-out comment.

And just to make things interesting, I will offer yet another x2 group point multiplier to the winners of this competition!!

Calculating Area in Hectares.

Well today was certainly interseting for us to watch you all solving a real world problem: how many hectares is our school property?


First of all: a big congratulations  to the Ultimate Survivors for winning the x2 group point multiplier.  


Many of you used a variety of strategies, but in the end, a lack of estimation left the super rock climbers and the UN groups' answers very prone to mistakes in calculation, especially when converting units.

I'd like to hear a little more about your experience, your thoughts, and specific things would change if I gave you the same exercise again.

As this is in English, consider this your English homework as well as your math homework.  Leave at least one comment below.

The Secret to Improving Your Writing

My friend Jon has been working on his masters degree, which is a university degree that you usually receive when you return to university after already graduating with a "bachelors" or "baccalaureate".  A masters is like "level two".  He's actually studying computer science, and is a great writer himself.

What I want to share is one of his assignments, which was completed as this video - which is really about the writing process.  Since we have studied and often use the writing process, I thought you might enjoy this video.

Alright, so today we listened and sang along with the physical changes song.  It does not look like there is a chemical changes song yet, so I'm looking to you to create lyrics!  One lucky persons' lyrics will be selected and we will make a recording (and maybe a video) for chemical changes.

One day , at Taipei 101 there was a bad guy that call Zolane ! He stole a diamond that cost 10000000 US dollars !  He had a kid called Zone  . Zone is 11 years old , so the

people said : HELP!!!! The super hero is here but …..... Zolane has already run away ….. so super hero is very upset , but the boss said “don’t be upset super hero I am very thank full , I will give you a gift “. Super hero said “I know you are nice to me , BYE~

When he went back home he called Merry and Carl come here , and they went to eat the awesome dinner Max and Carl was very happy , and Max said ” Today I will pay for the dinner ! ” Merry and Carl said “ OK ! ” When they go back home Max heard someone shout out “ HELP ” and Max told them he had something to do , so........  “ BYE ” When he went there he asked “ what happen ? ” The girl said “ there was a cockroach !! can you help me to kill it ? ” Max said “ OK....... he was very upset  ” but  Carl said “ don’t worry ” and Max freaked out for a second and he said “ why you are here ? ” Carl said “ I want to tell you a thing , Max said “ what thing ? ” Carl said “ Actually I am a spider man we can help other together , OK ? ” Max said “ what ? you are a spider man ? ” Carl said “ yes sorry I tricked you ” Max said “ that find , OK , we can help each other together ” ( NEXT DAY ) someone shouted out “ HELP!!! ” Max flew there and he saw Carl and he said “ HI spider man ”  Carl said “ good morning super hero ! ” and they help that beautiful girl to get her bag . They were very happy so they went to play . They played computer games , and went to park . When they got back home .Max’s phone rings , the sound is Zolane !! He said “ Merry is here now , if ypu want back she you need to bring a bag of chocolate and fight with me take your partner here come to Taipei 101 here ! ” Max said “ partner?? oh ! it’s Carl , so he called Carl here , he said “ lets go !! ” go to get Merry back ! ” Carl said “ OK ! ” when they get Taipei 101 they saw  Zolane stand on the highest place and Merry was there !! They took a bag of chocolate there , Max said “ fight with us now ! ” (angry) Zolane said “ come on ”  ( ghost face ) , then they fought for 7 days , last Zolane lose , Max ask “ give me back Merry ” Zolane said “OK,can you let me change my mind to be a good man and that me help people with you guys ” Carl and Max said “ OK , it great ” After 1month Zolane and his child Zone turned handsome .

The demigods trampled through the wood, arguing as they go. “Guys, could you shut up?” said Vera. “Fine.” said the boys, and stared daggers at eachother. “Look, there’s a door!” screamed Vera, the excited teens ran to the door and two demigods dressed in Greek armor stepped out and raised their swords, “Hi.” said Vera nervously.
“What do you want?” asked a big guy in Greek armor, “Can you let please let us come in?” asked Vera. “You’ll have to explain yourselves to the gods.” said another girl in Greek armor. They took Vera, Randy and Aaron to the court, and Iris messaged Zeus, the king of gods. He came down and said “My oh my, who do we have here? Explain! Girl, then blond boy, and then other boy.” “I’m Vera Mitchell, I come from Greece, I’m one of Aphrodite’s daughter’s, and I’m a girl.”said Vera. “Um, I’m Aaron McCarney, I also come from Greece, I’m a son of Ares, and I’m a boy.” said Aaron. “ I’m Randy Ranchill, I come from Greece, I’m a son of Hephaestus, and I’m a boy.” said Randy.
“This is Camp Demigod, a Greek camp, Demigods in camp often go to the tall heavenly cool mountain, Mount Olympus, to serve, help and meet their godly parents and so on. In Greece the columns are white and made of cloud, we have lessons on bloody defending, even bloodier offending and knowledge. Camp usually smells like burnt goat, because the goats are really bad cooks, so they burn themselves a lot. Mount Olympus is hosting the Olympic games this year, at the big green fields and it will be wonderful.” said Zeus, smiling.
It was night time, and as the three demigods lay in the N.D.C.( New Demigod Cabin), the boys were talking while Vera slept softly. “Dude, shut up, I want to sleep.” whispered Aaron, “No! Listen! Vera is going to pick me to be coolest boy in Greece, and you can’t change that!” huffed Randy. “You wanna fight?” challenged Aaron, “You bet! So, when, where, what, and how?” asked Randy. “Um, Friday, and today is Wednesday, Mount Olympus, swords and fighting.” said Aaron. “Okay, bad night!” grumbled Randy, and went to sleep, “You too.” said Aaron.
“Awwww!” yawned Vera, “Wake up sleepy boys! We’ve got a really big day! We have to visit Mount Olympus to meet the gods!” “Fine, I’m up.” grumbled Randy, barely looking at Vera. “Beware, zombie Aaron is up.” moaned Aaron, “Let’s go.” said Randy. They stepped out of a cabin and immediately met a goat standing on a fluffy white cloud. “Bahh~hello, I’m Curt, and I am the guardian goat of Olympus travelers, I will take you up to M.O. now, bahh~” yapped Curt. The threesome stepped onto the cloud and up, up, up they went! “Wow.” exclaimed Vera as she stared up to Olympus. “Okee dokee, Vera to Aphrodite’s villa, Aaron to Ares’s house, and Randy to Hephaestus’s courtyard. Do you understand?” asked Curt. “Yes.” they chorused.
Vera stepped onto a cloud and floated over to Aphrodite’s lovely villa, Aaron went to Ares’s fiery house, and Randy went to Hephaestus’s courtyard filled with metal. “Hello my love. Come in. I only have a few minutes.” said Aphrodite, as soon as she saw Vera. Vera stepped in, “Why am I here?” she asked. Oh, I need your help. Later, I have to pick the coolest god on Olympus, and I don’t know if I pick Ares or Hephaestus!” said Aphrodite, “Ares, pick him he’s cool. Should I pick Randy or Aaron?” asked Vera, “Aaron, no doubt. Okay, let’s primp and prepare for the ceremony.” said Aphrodite. Meanwhile, both Aaron and Randy were asking their godly parents how to get picked and preparing of course.
“Hello everyone, I am Aphrodite goddess of love and beauty, and today we are here to see me pick who is the coolest go on Olympus, Ares or Hephaestus. I pick.................Ares!” said Aphrodite. “No, you will pay Ares, and now!” yelled Hephaestus, and prepared to fight. “Wait! Before you fight let me announce that Aaron is the coolest.” said Vera. “Aaron, your going down!” shouted Randy.
The boys swords clashed, and so did the gods, screams filled M.O. and security guards jumped out and pulled away the crowd. “Clang, clang, clang!” Aaron swished, he slashed, and cut Randy on the arm, Ares banged his sword on Hephaestus’s helmet cutting off the feather. “Clang, clang, clang!” swords crashed, “No, stop!” screamed Vera. “Ah, gods alore! Stop this riot!” yelled Aphrodite. “Mom, stop this, please!” screamed Vera, “My love, watch out for the cliff!” yelled Aphrodite. Suddenly, Randy swept his arm around to defend his arm, and knocked Vera off her feet. She skidded along the slick floor, screamed, and fell off the cliff. “Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!” screamed Vera as she freefalled toward the ground.
“Noooooooooo!” screamed Aphrodite “Stop fighting! Can’t you see that Vera fell off the cliff?” No one listened to her, they just kept fighting. For another hour, Aphrodite sobbed while the boys kept fighting. Finally, Aaron slammed Randy on the ground and pointed his sword at Randy’s throat. “Do I win?” asked Aaron, “Yes!” wheezed Randy, and at the same time Ares sliced Hephaestus’s head off. “I win!” yelled Ares as Hephaestus’s head materialized on his head. “Humph! You win.” grumbled Hephaestus. “Aphrodite, darling, why are you crying?” asked Ares, “Because, you loser, Vera fell off the cliff!” yelled Aphrodite. “What!?” they all yelled, all surprised. “She’s gone!” screamed Aphrodite, and at the same time Vera’s voice rang out “OMG! Creepy black dude grabbing me! Help!” screamed Vera’s voice. Then Zeus came, “I heard Vera is missing? said Zeus. “Yes,   Vera is missing, Vera is missing, Vera is missing!” screamed Aaron as he let out a headaching roar. “Son, chill. We’ll find her in a quest!” said Ares, clapping Aaron on the back. “Find my daughter, boys!” said Aphrodite. “Let’s start the quest!” yelled Aaron. “I’m in too!” said Randy and they both shook hands.

Mythologies: "The Superman" - Justin

 THE SUPERMAN

A long time ago, in a small village a boy went out to play. His name was called Superman, he was really smart and he went to a dark forest. 

When he was walking he heard a sound, when he ran there he saw a little dragon and it was red. It looked like the dragon was hurt. Superman took him home and took care of him. 

Superman’s parents are dead when he was small, they were killed by Owen and Ale, they are evil, bad, and like to kill people. And so Superman promised he will kill them, Superman had a friend called JJ. He was good and kind. 

The little dragon became bigger and bigger and Superman called him Fire. Just when he was happy about his pet. The TV said the village had a one-eyed monster, Superman, JJ, Fire went out to fight with the monster. 

The monster was big, Superman used his fist to punched  him and JJ too. And Fire went to baked and used Fire to burn the monster , and they fought and fought. At last they won, and everyone was very happy.

And he heard people talking about where is Owen’s castle. Superman thought about how Owen killed her mom and dad, so he followed the road and Superman, JJ, and Fire walked and walked. At last they came to a mountain. 

Suddenly a big dragon came and stopped them going across the mountain. The dragon said’’ If you want to go over the mountain you need to fight and beat me.’’ Superman, JJ, and Fire had no choose. So they fought with the dragon the dragon is too big and the fire is too strong. And Superman saw another dragon was walking. And he had a idea. He told JJ and Fire to let the dragon chase them and that the dragon to bump into the other dragon and they will fight and Superman and JJ can run away. So the dragon chased JJ and Fire, and they smashed together and there was a loud BOOM!!!. The two dragon were very angry with each other so they fought together. 

And Superman. JJ. and Fire safely across ed the mountain. At night they fell asleep. When Superman woke up, its still night suddenly he saw a lighting little ball. He picked it up and it was a magic ball. 

WOW! Superman was so happy, because the magic ball can gave person magic power. So Superman, JJ,p and Fire all had magic power and they kept walking  to Owen’s castle. After days and days they came to Owen’s castle. Superman said ‘’ It is the time to fight with Owen and Ale. In this fight we can’t lose.’’ And they went in to the castle. It had some little monster but they are easy to beat, because they had magic power. At last they found Owen and Ale. Owen said’’ Ha!!! It is the time to beat you, if you want your life , just come and surrender. Superman said’’ No, I will not surrender, come and fight.’’ 

They fought and fought each other is was tie. It was very scary. Suddenly, Owen used a fire ball to hit Superman. ‘’Ah~~~~’’ said Superman. He had a big cut. But he didn’t give up her used the last power to fight. A big strong gold dragon just came out and fly to the sky. Go to dea! The gold dragon charge forward and and BOOM!!!!

the castle is broken and Owen and Ale is dead. And they went home and all of the people is very happy and the world is on peace

Awful Emperors

Were all the Roman Emperors awful?  This is difficult to tell, but looking at some of their actions, it looks like some of them may have been truly awful.  Read over the story of Claudius, Nero, Tiberius and Caligula that you were given, and create your own "Awful Emperor" story about another ancient ruler.  Reply as a comment.  Bonus for commenting on others' posts.

Unicef Fundraising Saturday!

Saturday was a huge success.  The numbers are not available yes, but there was a tremendous amount of money raised for the School-in-a-Box program.  Grade 5 operated an obstical course and below are the top times.  Our flea market was also fantastic, thank you for contributing so much stuff you didn't want.

-Did you race the obstical course?  What was your top time? 
-What did you think about our fun-fundraising day?  What could be even better for next year?

Cross country running: Area, perimeter and lengths of the sides of a rectangle.

The cross country running team is practicing on a 250m route.  The route is around the soccer field, and we know that the perimeter is exactly 250m because it was measured on this satellite picture.  We know that the route measured was a rectangle with square angles.

The distance down the rainbow track is 65m.

How long is each side of the rectangle?

What is the area of the soccer field inside the route?

Posting to our ePortfolios

Ok so here’s the plan!  Today we are going upload two different reflections to our ePortfolios.

1.Type in your grammar reflection which you began to write last class.  I guess that means you might need your English notebook.

2.Raz Kids reflection.  You will take a screenshot of raz kids and use that to write a reflection about your Raz-Kids progress.

How to you take a screenshot?  You open the page you want to take a picture of, then you press “print scrn”  It is above the insert key.   Next, you paste into a graphics program like paint.  You are able to paste to right onto google sites.

Using longitude and latitude

Well since many of us love looking at maps (especially your teacher) we now get to do so in math.  We are studying coordinate grids.  Here is a list of mystery cities.  I have given you their longitude and latitude, can you find which cities i'm listing?  Its a lot easier to use a computer for this, but I would like you to use the Atlas to practice working with coordinates on a plane:
